Innovative geothermal powered land-based system producing antibiotic-free Arctic Char and Steelhead with minimal energy/carbon footprint .
Matorka is an innovative Arctic Char farming operation based in Iceland, which makes optimal use of Iceland’s natural resources.
It has the potential to be the most cost efficient land based Salmonid farming operation in the world whilst being completely sustainable. The Matorka farm uses no antibiotics or chemicals, is powered by renewable energy, and makes a deliberate effort to protect the surrounding environment – all while producing a delicious fish.
The company is focused on land based farming of salmonid for world markets, which are high in Omega3 oils, and are in demand world wide. There are currently well over 2 million tons of farmed salmon/trout produced in the world, but unfortunately most of it comes from cage farming. Cage farming generally relies on chemicals and drugs to keep the fish from illness, death and parasites. Consequently, these farming sites have a hard time dealing with the biomass and associated pollutants/pathongens that leach into sea.
Matorka´s operation on the other hand are environmentally friendly, from feed to end product. The fish are fed a unique sustainable diet, no antibiotics, chemicals or growth hormones are used during the farming process, and most importantly the fish are not genetically modified (GMO) in any way. Their aim is simple – to produce the healthiest fish possible. The company is carbon neutral and aims to lead the aquaculture industry in sustainable practices.
